MCTP over SMBus/I2C (Management Component Transport Protocol over SMBus/I2C)
MCTP (Management Component Transport Protocol) over SMBus/I²C is a DMTF management transport binding that lets management controllers (such as BMC, EC, NIC) communicate over SMBus or I²C for monitoring, remote management, power, and thermal control. It is commonly used in servers, embedded systems, and hardware monitoring.
SMBus and I²C share the same electrical bus and the same MCTP binding, so a single decode covers both. Select this decode whether the bus is described as SMBus or as I²C.
MCTP is transport-independent and can run over PCIe, I²C, SMBus, I3C, UART, Ethernet, and similar interfaces. For channel-prefix differences, see Settings.
Decode Settings
- Channel: Assign SCL / SDA to logic analyzer channels.
- Destination Address Configuration: Set device addresses and corresponding protocols (opens the address table; Default restores the specification default address ladder).
- Advanced Decode Setting: Show detailed meaning of raw data. Field enabled (Enable) per protocol when checked. Default: Control / PLDM / NCSI / Ethernet / SPDM cleared.
- Control / PLDM / NCSI / Ethernet / NVME / SPDM / Vendor PCI / Vendor IANA
- SPDM Startup Setting: SPDM startup parameters. Default: Signature (S) 256, HashCnt (H) 2, Ext-AsymCnt (A) 1, Ext-HashCnt (E) 1.
